Minutes of the Wimberley Computer Club Board Meeting

January 17, 2002

Meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Pres. Albert Sternthal. Also present were: Curt Busk, Rod Rose, Jan Jackson, Mary Nall, Susan Springer, Bernice Brown.

Minutes of last Board meeting were approved as read.

Treasurer's report: balance of $2449.92 accepted.

It was suggested that members be encouraged to read minutes on our website, to simplify the approval of minutes at regular meetings.

It was explained that door prizes are obtained by selecting "rebate items" from newspaper ads, and Club only has to pay the tax. Suggestion was made that all board members watch for these ads, and help to collect items to be given at September meeting.

There was discussion about prints for the History book. Jan can choose either regular photos or digital at her discretion.

Curt said there are 20 names now on list for "Intermediate Windows" class (teacher: Rhondda Cotten). He will check with all those to determine the 12 who will attend the first classes this year. Others will be on waiting list for next class. Classes will be at the Katherine Ann Porter facility, @ $30 per student (club to pay balance of tuition) for 6 sessions. Dates to be determined."Beginners Computer" class is ongoing (teacher: Charlie Coe).

Schedule: 1st Thursday = Grab Bag 1 - 2:30 p.m. 2nd and 4th Thursdays = SIG (tentatively, Internet Class) 1 - 2:30 p.m. (Curt and Rod are directors of the SIGs) 3rd Thursdays = Digital Camera class (Rod Rose & Glen Fryer) 1 - 2:30 p.m. 4th Tuesdays = Regular meeting 7 p.m

Curt offered to be a back-up for presenting programs, in case there was a last minute cancellation by a speaker. He would present "How to organize files on the Hard Drive".

There was discussion about raising dues from $15 to maybe $20? It was decided to leave it at $15.

It was suggested that we could place Computer Club flyers at the Visitor's Center.

Gordon announced that he would present the program for Jan. 22 meeting, titled: "How computers were used to determine ownership of underwater oil field owned by United Kingdom and Norway, in the North Sea".

Gordon welcomed suggestions about speakers for programs at monthly meetings.

Curt reported that Katherine Ann Porter school has asked the Computer Club to be a non-profit-club partner with them for a Grant (about $10,000-$15,000) that will be used for (1)computer classes for KAP parents and (2) to place used computers in homes of KAP parents (disadvantaged). Also, Computer Club will again apply for a Community Networking Grant ($500,000) which we barely missed last year(by 7 tenths of a point). This would provide public access terminals in Chamber of Commerce, Library, Wimberley ISD,etc., and would provide hardware & wireless connections, training, internet consultants, etc.

It was decided that instead of using random selection from entire club roster, the numbered sign-in sheet at monthly meetings will be used to determine winner of door prize. Gordon offered to make cardboard numbered tabs to be used in drawing from the "hat".

Meeting was adjourned at 11:40 a.m.

Respectfully Submitted
Bernice Brown
